History & Group Overview
A NAME TRUSTED SINCE 75 YEARS
Windlass Group, incorporated in 1943 at “Ghanta Ghar” Dehradun, is a household name in the State of Uttrakhand, India. Employing over 2000 people globally, headquartered at Haridwar Road, Dehradun, Windlass is the only business house from Uttrakhand to have made a name globally.
Serving the people across the world for the past 75 years, Windlass is a hallmark of Precision, Quality, Integrity, Trust and their commitment to on-time Delivery.
The history of the group dates back to 1941 when a young and motivated Mr.Ved Prakash Windlass at the age of 22 moved from AmbalaCantt to the valley of Dehradun. Here he worked as a government contractor before founding a small cutlery unit in 1943 by the name of ‘Windlass Steel Crafts’. Windlass Steel Crafts (WSC) was awarded the contract to build their critical and unique combat knife, the Kukri by the famed British Gurkha Regiment. Mr. Windlass worked day and night to deliver contracts and build his company with the help of local talent and craftsmen. Known only for its lush green mountains and good climate, no entrepreneur had ever set foot in Dehradun before Mr. Windlass. Mr. V.P. Windlass not only made Dehradun his home, he also developed the city into a business center. He gave employment to the local people and set up his industry in the heart of the city. Even now Windlass Steel Crafts is fondly known as the Kukri factory by the locals.
In the 1970’s Mr. V.P. Windlass’s sons entered the business and thereby started the modernization and expansion of WSC. Mr.Sudhir Windlass, the third born son of Mr. V.P. Windlass, has been a visionary from the beginning. He streamlined the manufacturing bringing everything under one roof instead of outsourcing. As a result WSC is not one factory but a combination of many factories. This allowed Windlass to provide employment to more and more local people.
Over the years the group has diversified successfully in the fields of Steel Fabrication and Sword Manufacturing, Real-Estate, Infrastructure, Hospitality, Garment Manufacturing, Oilfield Equipment Manufacturing amongst other things. It is unlikely that Mr. Windlass could have envisioned the tremendous impact his small firm would have when he founded his company 72 years ago. Yet his legacy lives on today as his sons and grand children continue to up hold the high standards and tradition set decades ago.
